Future Plans

The Government has entrusted Villa Portelli to Heritage Malta, following the Cabinet’s approval for the title of the villa to be transferred from the Lands Authority to the national agency for the protection and conservation of cultural heritage. Heritage Malta will revive Villa Portelli, located in Kalkara, by restoring the building and making it accessible for public enjoyment.

The gardens surrounding Villa Portelli will also be embellished for the enjoyment of Kalkara’s community and the general public. Extending over four tumoli of land, the gardens are planned to offer spaces for relaxation and education and will feature indigenous plants.

Some of the villa’s rooms will be transformed into offices and spaces to be used by Heritage Malta’s education and underwater units and by the Kalkara Local Council.

Restoration works have already commenced. Estimated to cost €3 million, they include the repair of damage caused to Villa Portelli during last February’s Storm Helios.
